What is involved in the role of the AMI Communications Field Technician?
Reporting to the AMI Operations Manager, the Communications Field Technician is a specialist, technology focused role responsible for identifying, investigating and diagnosing operational issues associated with the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) through to their completion. The focus of the role is to:
Undertake advanced metering infrastructure issue investigation and resolution
Maintain business continuity, compliance and security standards via thorough procedural execution and accurate record keeping.
Engage in and execute a program for continuous improvement
As the AMI Communications Field Technician, what can you expect to do?
The key responsibilities of the Communications Field Technician position are:
Advanced Metering Infrastructure Issue Investigation and Resolution
Working on a leading edge mesh radio networks and associated tools, the field technician will routinely complete AMI network management systems checks and identify faults and issues requiring investigation.
Undertake investigations including cross system checks and validation to confirm the origin of the issue and determine if further field diagnosis is required
Undertake field diagnosis including on site investigations of radio communications equipment and electricity meters (which include communications interfaces) to determine root cause analysis and initiate remedial works as is appropriate
Where remedial works are required the field tech will create work orders and service tickets to ensure works are completed and issues are resolved ahead of service level requirements – namely resolution of specific meter communications and data collection issues within 72 hours
Track issues and works through to completion
Maintain Business Continuity, Compliance and Security
Undertake thorough procedural execution and maintain accurate record keeping, including but not limited to:
Routine application of approved procedures and work instructions to ensure communications network and associated devices (meter, HAN, etc) maintain compliance with standards
Complete record keeping and tracking of identified issues so that issues can be managed through their life cycle across the operations team (eg handover mid issue life cycle) and emerging trends can be diagnosed.
Proactive detection and investigation of potential network or device security incidents
Maintain the security of equipment issued and accessed in support of the role and notify the AMI Operations Manager in the event that the security of this equipment is compromised (ie lost, stolen or misused)
Develop and Execute a Program for Continuous Improvement
Initiates process improvement and or develops procedures that enhance the outcomes, efficiency or quality to enable continuous improvement in operations
Escalate patterns of issues that may be systemic of underlying trends through problem tickets for further engineering analysis
Pursue operational excellence for ongoing AMI Operations
Contribute to ongoing testing activities to meet both project and BAU testing requirements, including managing the liaison with external service providers for the delivery of selected testing services.
What are we looking for in you?
As the AMI Communications Field Technician you will have strong skills across aspects of technology operations and field-based support.
Tertiary qualification in Information Communications Technology or a related discipline
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in radio communication systems support and or maintenance
A strong understanding of wireless IP communications and protocols
A proven track record of problem determination and resolution
Excellent communication skills (written, presentation and verbal)
Ability to document and apply formal procedures and processes
Strong record keeping skills
Ability to write clearly and concisely and produce professional reports
Demonstrated experience in an operational environment, including the ability to operate successfully both as a individual operative and in a multi-discipline / multi-vendor team.
Knowledge of smart meters, metering applications or AMI infrastructure
Utilities experience would be advantageous
Strong customer focus
Electrical certification relevant to installing or maintaining meters.
Proven ability to build and maintain relationships and work as a team player
