A unique opportunity has become available for a Pro Bono lawyer with up to 2 years post admission experience to join DLA Piper, based in either our Sydney or Melbourne office. 
 
In your role, you will work closely with the Asia Pacific Pro Bono Director to evaluate, allocate and monitor pro bono referrals, ensuring the delivery of high quality service to all pro bono clients.  You will assist with identifying and implementing Australian pro bono projects, whilst building and maintaining strong relationships with pro bono clients and collaborators, including in-house counsel of commercial clients.  Your job responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Implementing the firm's pro bono policy and ensuring compliance across the Australian firm
  • Carrying a medium pro bono case load including assisting with legal research, report drafting, submission writing, litigation, legal advice and legal education
  • Developing and managing relationships with key pro bono clients across Australia
  • Working with and supporting the global Pro Bono team on international projects
  • Preparing internal and external communications relating to the firm's pro bono work
  • Monitoring and evaluating the pro bono practice, including the collection and collation of pro bono data 
  • Representing the firm at relevant events and conferences to promote the importance of pro bono as a professional responsibility

The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated commitment to pro bono and social justice, as well as strong commercial experience in sourcing, developing and maintaining pro bono client relationships.  A thorough knowledge of international human rights and interaction with human rights treaty mechanisms is desirable. 

You will have experience working in a commercial law firm, managing pro bono projects or clinics, as well as legal experience in specific areas of law relevant to pro bono work, such as human rights, credit and debt, criminal law, mental health and family violence.  Your strong presentation skills, as well as your excellent verbal and written communication skills will contribute to your success in this role.
